AI tools cannot recommend what they cannot understand. A practical look at what makes a business legible to them.
AI assistants answer by drawing on the material they can read: your website, directories, reviews, press and any other public reference to your business. If those sources are thin, inconsistent or vague, you are unlikely to be referenced.
Say precisely what you do, and where
Vague positioning is the most common problem. "Design-led solutions" tells a language model nothing. "Brand identity and web design for construction and hospitality businesses in the North West" tells it a great deal.
Be consistent everywhere
Your business name, address, service list and description should match across your website, Google Business Profile, LinkedIn and any directory listing. Contradictions reduce confidence in all of them.
Answer questions in your own words
Pages that answer real client questions — cost, process, timescales, suitability — give AI tools something concrete to draw on. Marketing copy that says nothing specific does not.
None of this guarantees a citation. It does make you far easier to find, understand and reference correctly.
